From May 19 through June 30, 2025, New Yorkers can call 311 to request a free, no-penalty inspection from the NYC Department of Buildings. This program is open to small homeowners and business owners seeking expert analysis of building features and equipment such as decks, patios, retaining walls, facades in buildings under six stories, business signs, unregistered boilers, and unregistered private elevator devices. During the inspection, agency inspectors will identify any safety concerns or Code issues and offer guidance for making necessary repairs without issuing penalties. This project was launched in 2005 and aims to help property owners maintain safe buildings while avoiding fines.
