The Homeless Outreach Population Estimate (HOPE) is an annual survey conducted during the last 10 days in January to estimate the number of people experiencing unsheltered homelessness in New York City. The HOPE count provides critical data that helps shape how the City directs resources to address homelessness.
The 2026 HOPE survey will be conducted overnight on Tuesday night, January 27, 2026, from 10:00 PM to 4:00 AM. If there is inclement weather, HOPE will be rescheduled for February 3, 2026.
Volunteers are needed! Every January, thousands of volunteers across the five boroughs participate in the HOPE count, canvassing streets, subway stations, parks, and other public spaces across the city to identify individuals living unsheltered. We need volunteers to canvass streets, subways, and public spaces during this time. This is an opportunity to participate in a crucial citywide effort. Please register today at nyc.gov/hope.
