Starting June 1, 2026, properties with 1–9 residential units and certain special-use buildings receiving DSNY collection will be required to use the official NYC Bin for trash set out. This includes houses of worship, nonprofits, City agencies, and professional offices located in residential buildings. Failure to use a NYC bin with a secure lid for trash setout may result in fines.
DSNY announced that a warning period will remain in effect through September 7, with full enforcement beginning Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
Official NYC Bins are designed to be rodent resistant and compatible with DSNY’s mechanical collection equipment. New Yorkers have already purchased more than 1 million bins citywide. DSNY notes that demand has increased in recent weeks and supplies are being restocked daily at NYC Home Depot locations.
Buildings with 1–9 units may continue using existing bins with secure lids that are 55 gallons or smaller until June 1. After that date, only official NYC Bins may be used for trash set out.
The City is also continuing its broader residential containerization effort:
- Properties with 10–30 units will eventually choose between individual bins and stationary on-street containers.
- Properties with 31+ units will use assigned on-street containers serviced by automated collection trucks.
DSNY will host virtual information sessions on:
