Brooklyn Community Board 14 is saddened by the passing of Duane Joseph on August 7, 2023. He was a dedicated board member who was passionate about the community – both its people and places. Duane offered great vision and spearheaded the addition of Economic Development to CB14’s committee structure. He worked hard to bring agency information to community members and local insight to agency proposals.
Duane was simultaneously critical of local government and a great believer in it. His participation served to instill in others that same confidence or at least willingness to strive toward solutions. He became a CB14 member in 2015. He served as the Youth Committee Co-Chair, the Community Environment, Cultural Affairs and Economic Development Co-Chair, as well as the Co-Chair for the Flatbush African Burial Ground Task Force. Duane was known for detailed reports laced with humor. In 2023 he was elected as CB14’s First Vice Chair.
Duane’s introduction to the board was mainly through filing service delivery requests, then wanting to become a part of the solution to those issues. He took initiative to meet with CB14’s district office to talk about community conditions, then followed that meeting up by reaching out to his local business improvement district, then followed that up by attending 70th Precinct Community Council meetings and all of the sector Build the Block meetings once NYPD began the NCO program.
All of what he did was a reflection of the fact that Duane Joseph was a stellar human being. He will be so very missed.
