Storm and Flood Resources

For those who suffered flooding during the storm on September 29, 2023, Brooklyn Community Board 14 compiled the following resources to assist and inform residents.

Government Resources

• Are you eligible for city, state or federal recovery assistance?
  Homeowners, tenants and business are encouraged to report storm and flood damage to NYC Housing Recovery Operations and share information to see if they are eligible for city, state or federal recovery assistance: Report Damage Portal or call 212-615-8329
• Report damage and request repairs
  Submit a service request to 311 for damage to public or private property: visit the Severe Weather 311 page with links to common service requests.
• Impacted property owners may request reimbursements
  Affected property owners may file a property damage claim to request reimbursement for certain damages (please note there is a 90-day window from the day of the occurrence to file a claim with the Comptroller’s Office)
• Oil tanks in flooded basements
  Residential oil tanks in flooded basements may leak or rupture. If you suspect an oil spill in your home, call the NYSDEC Spill Hotline at (800) 457-7362. For more information on home heating oil spills, visit www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/8428.html#response or call 311.
• Request a rain garden
  Rain gardens allow rain to be naturally absorbed into the ground instead of flowing into the sewer system. See the rain garden FAQs. For more information on a specific location or to request a rain garden call 718-595-7599 or email raingardens@dep.nyc.gov
• Receive emergency alerts
  Sign up to receive official severe weather and emergency alerts, among others, directly from Notify NYC

  Visit DEP’s Rainfall Ready page where you can find more information about what the City is doing and you can do to mitigate storm damage. • Merchants impacted by the storm should contact the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce at info@brooklynchamber.com to see what assistance the chamber can facilitate

• NHS Brooklyn provides information and counseling on home and flood insurance and claims. Request counseling or check out their upcoming webinars including one on flood risk on November 7
