HERricane NYC Program for Young Women in Emergency Management

NYC OEM invites high school students to apply this free summer program for women and non-binary youth ages 16–22 who are interested in emergency management and leadership. Held July 14–18, 2025, at NYCEM’s Brooklyn headquarters, the program features workshops, simulations, field trips, and mentorship. Selected participants may also join monthly “aftermath” sessions after the main program. HERricane NYC is inclusive of cisgender and transgender women and non-binary people. No-Penalty Building Inspections

From May 19 through June 30, 2025, New Yorkers can call 311 to request a free, no-penalty inspection from the NYC Department of Buildings. This program is open to small homeowners and business owners seeking expert analysis of building features and equipment such as decks, patios, retaining walls, facades in buildings under six stories, business signs, unregistered boilers, and unregistered private elevator devices. During the inspection, agency inspectors will identify any safety concerns or Code issues and offer guidance for making necessary repairs without issuing penalties. This project was launched in 2005 and aims to help property owners maintain safe buildings while avoiding fines.
