In case you missed it…
Starting November 12, 2024, all properties with 1-9 residential units must use bins (55 gallons or less) with secure lids for trash collection. This change aims to remove trash bags from the streets and reduce rat infestations.
New! DSNY is hosting virtual information sessions where you can learn more about the new containerization rules. Upcoming sessions on November 7, 14, 21 and December 12. Consult the schedule and sign up here.
While you may continue using a compliant bin that you already have, by June 2026, it will be mandatory to use an Official NYC Bin, not just any similar bin. The Official NYC bins are available at a lower cost than similar options at retail stores and can be purchased online at www.bins.nyc or by calling 1-855-NYC-BINS.
NYC Bins are also available for recycling and composting, though they are not required. Compost must be set out in bins (55 gallons or less, either an official bin or another type), properly labeled, and with secure lids. Curbside composting is mandatory in Brooklyn.
DSNY will retrofit or replace collection trucks with mechanical tipping arms compatible with the new bins, which will speed up collection and reduce the risk of spills from manual handling.
