NYC OEM invites high school students to apply this free summer program for women and non-binary youth ages 16–22 who are interested in emergency management and leadership. Held July 14–18, 2025, at NYCEM’s Brooklyn headquarters, the program features workshops, simulations, field trips, and mentorship. Selected participants may also join monthly “aftermath” sessions after the main program. HERricane NYC is inclusive of cisgender and transgender women and non-binary people. There is no cost to participate. Applicants must submit the required forms by June 20 and will be notified within two weeks of the deadline. Download the application for full details.

From May 19 through June 30, 2025, New Yorkers can call 311 to request a free, no-penalty inspection from the NYC Department of Buildings. This program is open to small homeowners and business owners seeking expert analysis of building features and equipment such as decks, patios, retaining walls, facades in buildings under six stories, business signs, unregistered boilers, and unregistered private elevator devices. During the inspection, agency inspectors will identify any safety concerns or Code issues and offer guidance for making necessary repairs without issuing penalties. This project was launched in 2005 and aims to help property owners maintain safe buildings while avoiding fines.
Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke invites middle and high school students to participate in the Congressional App Challenge. Students can work individually or in teams of up to four to create an original app using any coding language and for any platform (mobile, web, or other). Winners will be invited to present their work at the #HouseofCode celebration at the U.S. Capitol.

If you have active Medicaid, you may be eligible for a range of support services through the Social Care Network. This initiative connects Medicaid recipients with essential non-clinical resources including housing support, nutrition assistance, enhanced care management, and transportation services. The program is offered by CABS Health Network, a nonprofit organization with over 45 years of experience providing home care, care management, and community-based services across New York.
Need support with tech challenges? Neighborhood Tech Help offers free one-on-one tech support at locations near you. Digital Navigators are available to help with a wide range of issues including avoiding scams, recovering passwords, accessing low-cost internet, using communication tools, finding reliable health information, and navigating online services. Support may be available in multiple languages. Call the hotline (10 AM–5 PM, Mon/Wed/Fri, except holidays) or email for help, or bring your device to a participating location for in-person support.

Is your child a struggling reader? Join LAC virtual office hours to meet the founders and new principal of Central Brooklyn Literacy Academy. The school’s mission is to break the cycle of illiteracy for students with dyslexia, language-based learning disabilities, and others who face reading challenges. Learn how their literacy-focused public school will support students in becoming stronger readers.
This program helps jobseekers build skills while working to keep New York City’s parks and playgrounds clean and green. Through the Parks Opportunity Program, participants take on a six-month maintenance role with NYC Parks, earning $18.54 per hour. The program also offers paid career coaching, resume development, and the chance to earn valuable credentials such as a high school equivalency diploma, driver’s license, CDL, security certifications, and horticulture training. A $101.25 background check fee applies to candidates not currently employed by the City. NYC Parks is an equal opportunity employer.

The Family Youth and Peer Support (FYPS) Program is a free resource for Brooklyn youth and families facing social, emotional, developmental, substance use, or behavioral challenges. Operated by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, FYPS offers peer-led support to youth ages 8–24 and their caregivers, with no insurance required. Services focus on empowerment, connection to care, and overcoming barriers. Youth involved with mental health services, ACS, housing or immigration systems, juvenile justice, DOE, or OPWDD may qualify. Those facing physical, economic, or social challenges are also encouraged to connect.

Prepare for a career in construction with free Site Safety Training (SST). NYC Local Law 196 requires all workers on major construction sites to complete SST training. This program offers both the 10-hour and 40-hour SST courses at no cost. Eligible participants must be 18 or older, NYC residents with proof of residency, and have access to a laptop or desktop with a working camera for virtual sessions. Attendance for all sessions is required to complete the course. First Course NYC trains aspiring restaurant cooks through an eight-week, full-time culinary program led by industry professionals, providing fundamental skills, a weekly MetroCard, and a $355 stipend (if eligible). Participants earn the NYC Food Protection Certificate and gain hands-on, paid training in a respected NYC restaurant kitchen, leading to full-time employment. Eligible applicants must be NYC residents, 18 or older, authorized to work in the U.S., earning no more than $50,000 annually, and willing to work full-time. Internationally trained nurses can improve their English skills and prepare for U.S. licensure through a no-cost NCLEX-RN Preparation Course for English Language Learners. This program supports nurses in strengthening their English, understanding the U.S. healthcare system, and preparing for the NCLEX-RN exam to become licensed in New York State. Eligibility: Open to NYC residents authorized to work in the U.S. with a nursing degree from outside the U.S., high-intermediate English proficiency, and an annual income of $40,000 or less if employed. Applicants must also have submitted a nurse license verification application, access to a computer and internet, and be COVID-19 vaccinated (unless exempt)
A 16-week paid training program for young women ages 14–24 to mentor girls in Brooklyn. Participants receive $2,000 while gaining trauma-informed coaching, life-skills training, community resources, and networking opportunities. Green Teen Workforce Program for 18-24 year olds Green Teen Internship for 14-18 year olds. Duration: 5 months. Start Date: March 10, 2025.
Gain hands-on experience in forest restoration while earning $16.50/hour in Prospect Park, home to Brooklyn’s last remaining forest. Youth Crew members work on trail maintenance, plant native species, remove invasive plants, and help sustain the park’s woodlands. The program runs from April to October with spring and fall sessions on Saturdays and a full-time summer session. Open to youth seeking professional experience in green careers.
