The Department of Health offers free in-person and virtual trainings to all residents who want to learn about safe and effective methods for rat prevention in the home and community. These free two-hour training is available to everyone, but it may be especially helpful for: superintendents and building staff, property owners and managers, neighborhood associations, community gardeners, business owners and staff. DOHMH also offers more intensive three-day courses for pest control professionals.
Visit the Parks Department review their guide to help you find places to stay cool! In their new Cool It! NYC map, you can find places all across the city to hydrate, refresh, and stay in the shade. These include locations with water features (spray showers, drinking fountains, outdoor pools), streets and location with shade trees and areas of greater heat vulnerability. On the same page, Parks offers a downloadable spreadsheet with the full list of NYC Parks spray shower, misting station, and drinking fountain locations
When it's very hot, air conditioning will help keep you safe. If you don't have air conditioning, find a cool place to visit nearby, like a friend’s place, a mall, museum, coffee shop, library, or an NYC cooling center. When it's not scorching out but it's still hot, you can also cool off at parks, areas with shade, sprinklers, or pools. Cooling center locations can also be found by calling 311 (VRS: 212-639-9675 or TTY: 212-504-4115).
The Market Nutrition Program provides eligible older New Yorkers coupon booklets, worth $25, which can be redeemed at participating farmers’ markets, farm stands, and mobile markets to buy locally grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs. The program aims to promote improved nutrition through increased consumption of locally grown fresh produce, and improve sales at participating vendors. Starting on August 1, 2024, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients will now qualify for free health insurance, based on income qualifications. The Essential Plan has $0 monthly premiums, no deductible, and very low cost-sharing. It covers comprehensive benefits including office visits, hospital care, screenings, prescription medicine, among others. Accredited DVS staff members are processing Veterans Affairs (VA) claims for NYC Veterans and their families in all five boroughs. To bridge gaps in the system, the NYC Department of Veterans’ Services has partnered with the New York State Division of Veterans’ Services to process claims and broaden their current outreach approach while strengthening bonds with the Veteran community. Meet with a DVS Veteran Benefits Coordinator to help you prepare and package a VA claim that is substantial, valid, and clearly identifies all pertinent information.
The City of New York seeks artists interested in creating a public monument that honors the lives and legacy of the Service Members who died in action during the Global War on Terror. The memorial will also serve as a permanent declaration of “Thank you” and “Welcome Home” to our Post 9/11 Veteran community. Interested individuals can view the guidelines and apply ahead of the August 30, 2024, deadline by visiting the website.
The DCLA is seeking four artists to join the Public Artists in Residence (PAIR) program in 2024. One selected artist will be placed in residence with each of the following City agencies/offices: the Administration for Children Services, the Human Resources Administration, the Commission on Human Rights, and the Mayor’s Office of Equity & Racial Justice. Applications are open for the Business Preparedness and Resiliency Program (BPREP) Risk Assessment and Grant Program, which provides support to small businesses in coastal and stormwater flood zones, helping them become more resilient to natural disasters. Eligible businesses can receive a free on-site risk assessment and up to $5,000 in grant funding for resiliency equipment like flood barriers and generators.
This program help individuals maintain a drug-free lifestyle and stable recovery program. Services include screening and intervention, clinical assessment, counseling, peer support, psychiatric evaluation and treatment, MICA services, MAT, overdose prevention, DWI evaluation and treatment, and adolescent treatment.

NYC DOT Art is seeking proposals for artwork to activate the Summer Street routes as a one-day installation throughout all five Summer Street dates. Selected artists may receive up to $20,000 to cover all expenses to design, fabricate, present the artwork including, but not limited to, costs associated with the following: labor, materials, fabrication, engineering, installation, equipment rental, storage, and transportation. Artists may consider an additive format with components created through public participation, allowing the artwork to shift, grow, and evolve throughout each event date and the event series. NYC DOT Art has launched the Community Commissions: Artists Request for Proposals (RFP). This initiative invites artists to collaborate with community-based organizations to create temporary public art on NYC DOT infrastructure citywide. Artists can submit proposals by June 30, 2024. Selected artworks may be displayed for up to 11 months, with funding up to $20,000 available for project costs.
The She Built NYC program seeks artists to create public monuments honoring remarkable women in all five boroughs. Honorees include civil rights pioneer Elizabeth Jennings Graham in Manhattan, legendary Billie Holiday in Queens, Dr. Helen Rodríguez Trías in the Bronx, and Katherine Walker on Staten Island. A monument for Shirley Chisholm is already underway in Brooklyn. Artists interested in this opportunity can submit samples of past work and supplementary materials to be considered through the City’s Percent for Art commissioning process.

Over 5 weeks, learn to use cameras, lighting, and sound to tell a story of family heritage, women’s empowerment, or the importance of mental health as teenagers. All workshops will be in Spanish and English. A stipend of $1100 is provided to participants in the Lab. Applicants must be 15-20 years old. Application closes on June 4th 2024.

Four-week workshop that teaches filmmaking to students who learn differently. It provides community, support, and resources for neurodivergent NYC students ages 15-21 as they explore storytelling through experimental filmmaking. Participants receive a $500 stipend in the lab. Apply by June 4, 2024.
