Local resources are available to help you prepare and submit taxes for free. Below is a list of free tax preparation services in Brooklyn.
- NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection NYC Free Tax Prep – In-Person and Drop Off Service
- In-Person Service: Sessions take a minimum of 30 minutes. Drop-off Service: You can drop off your tax documents and pick up the completed return later.
- Families with dependents who earned $80,000 or less and individuals who earned $56,000 or less in 2022 (including self-employed/gig workers) can use NYC Free Tax Prep.
- IRS certified VITA/TCE volunteer preparers will sit down with families and individuals to complete their tax return. At select in-person tax prep sites, preparers can help self-employed filers complete a tax return. Use NYC Free Tax Prep map to find a location near you.
- You can also visit nyc.gov/taxprep or call 311 and ask for “tax preparation” for locations near you.
- GetYourRefund – Online Service
- Virtual program that connects filers to NYC Free Tax Prep providers to have their return completed for them. Free to qualifying households. Create an account on getyourrefund.org/nyc to get started. You may also find contact information of providers here.
- Grow Brooklyn Free Tax Prep
- Available to families with dependents who earned $80,000 or less, individuals who earned $56,000 or less, and self-employed filers with expenses of $35,000 or less in 2022.

- Brooklyn Public Library
- Free tax assistance is available to those who qualify, in collaboration with several providers and the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection.

- Community Tax Aid
- Free virtual tax preparation for families with dependents who earned $57,000 or less and individuals who earned $35,000 or less, with less than $10,300 Investment Income.
- In-person assistance at 3 locations: Bedford-Stuyvesant, Manhattan and Queens. Appointments available after submitting tax documents to Community Tax Aid.

- IRS – Free Tax Return Preparation for Qualifying Taxpayers
- IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free basic tax return preparation to qualified individuals. Sites are operated by IRS partners and staffed by volunteers. A majority of the TCE sites are operated by the AARP Foundation’s Tax Aide program.
