Get paid to help keep New Yorkers safe after winter storms.

Emergency Snow Shovelers are called on after heavy snowfalls to remove snow and ice citywide from public areas like bus stops, crosswalks, fire hydrants, and step streets. Last year, more than 7,800 of them stepped up to help melt 783 million pounds of snow and cleared 135,000 crosswalks, 34,000 bus stops and 29,000 fire hydrants.

Shovelers who register at a DSNY registration event prior to Nov. 30 will be eligible for a paid four-hour orientation in December, as well as fast-tracked processing to receive a paycheck within two weeks of working.

The next Brooklyn Emergency Snow Registration Event will be Saturday, October 3, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the PS 289 George V. Brower, 900 St Marks Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11213.

Action Required Before Attending:

Visit nyc.gov/SnowEmploy to sign up to secure your spot for the registration event and to review the required documents you must bring to ensure proper registration and payment. If you do not sign up for a registration event in advance, appointments are not guaranteed.

At the registration event, you will need to:

  • Confirm you are at least 18 years old, able to do heavy physical labor and eligible to work in the US
  • Have a Social Security Number and bring the physical card

Additional events across the five boroughs will be announced on DSNY’s @NYCsanitation social media channels and at nyc.gov/SnowEmploy.

After registration, DSNY will send a confirmation email with an invitation to the paid orientation. Shovelers will then be assigned to a DSNY garage to report to in the event of significant snowfalls, based on borough needs and location preferences.
