Recent instances of brush fires in New York City, driven by prolonged dry weather, highlight the importance of staying informed and prepared. While often associated with rural areas, brush fires can also occur in the City’s parks, greenways, and vegetated spaces, where dry conditions can quickly turn small sparks into dangerous fires.
To address the recent rise in brush fires, the FDNY is urging all residents to stay informed and take steps to reduce the risk. FDNY Fire Safety Education teams will be visiting parks across the city next week to share tips on fire prevention and safety. Specific locations and times to attend these valuable sessions are below.
Help Reduce the Risk:
- Avoid outdoor burning, such as campfires, bonfires, and any open flames.
- Grilling is banned in NYC parks while drought conditions persist.
- Dispose of cigarette butts and matches responsibly if smoking outdoors.
- Stay on designated trails in parks to protect vegetation and reduce fire risks.
- Remember: Fireworks are illegal throughout NYC.
- Remove excessive brush, leaves, and litter from sidewalks adjacent to residences and businesses.
Stay vigilant and keep your community safe. For more fire safety tips, visit Brush Fires – FDNY Smart. Together, we can reduce the risk and ensure our parks and neighborhoods remain safe for everyone.
