Fair Fares NYC Expands Income Eligibility

Effective today, Tuesday, January 7, 2025, more New Yorkers can qualify for discounted transit fares through Fair Fares NYC. The NYC Department of Social Services- Human Resources Administration (DSS-HRA) has expanded access to the Fair Fares transit discount by implementing a rule change that increases the program’s income eligibility standard to 145% of the federal poverty level, up from 120%, making discounted fares accessible to more households.

Fair Fares NYC offers a 50% discount on subway, eligible bus fares, and Access-A-Ride trips. Enrollment is open to residents aged 18-64 whose income meets the updated requirements.

The Fair Fares NYC Program helps eligible New York City residents with low incomes manage their transportation costs by providing them with a 50% discount on public transportation, including subway and eligible bus fares. Pay-per-Ride, weekly unlimited, and monthly unlimited options are all available. Fair Fares can also provide 50% off MTA Access-A-Ride paratransit trips.

Eligibility is open to New Yorkers aged 18-64 who meet income requirements (below) and are not already receiving discounted transportation through MTA or City programs. Cash Assistance and SNAP recipients may also qualify.

Enrollment can be completed online through ACCESS HRA. View these enrollment guides and instructional videos in English and Spanish to get started.
